01 / Notice

Joy is also information.

It can be easy to give discomfort a full hearing while treating delight as a distraction. We notice what needs fixing. We postpone the song, the walk, the conversation that makes us feel more like ourselves.

Joy can tell us something about what nourishes us, who we enjoy being with, and which parts of us have been waiting for an invitation. It deserves a voice in the decisions we make.

You don’t have to turn every pleasure into a project. Some things are allowed to be good simply because they make being alive feel good.

Try this in an ordinary day.

Recall one recent moment when you felt interested, engaged, or quietly glad. Small counts.
Name what was present: movement, beauty, play, companionship, solitude, or something else.
Choose one small way to welcome that quality again this week.

What have I been calling a luxury that actually helps me feel like myself?

02 / Discern

What is truly indicated?

A message arrives. Someone is disappointed. A plan changes. Before you have taken a breath, a familiar response may already be offering its services: explain, fix, defend, agree, disappear.

That response may have a good reason for being there. You can listen to what it is trying to protect while taking a moment to consider what this situation actually needs.

Discernment asks us to notice the difference between what we know, what we imagine, and what we want to do about it. Sometimes a clear conversation is indicated. Sometimes more information, a boundary, an apology, or time to think.

Before you answer.

Ask: what has actually happened? Keep this separate from the meaning you are giving it.
Notice the feeling and the impulse it brings. What are you hoping your response will accomplish?
Choose the smallest honest next step. “I’d like a little time to think” is a response, too.

What would I choose if I didn’t have to resolve the whole situation right now?

03 / Stay connected

Love without leaving yourself.

Someone asks something of you, and your yes arrives before you have checked whether you mean it. Later, you feel tired, irritated, or strangely absent from your own life.

Caring about another person and including yourself in the conversation can happen together. Your needs are part of the relationship. So are your limits, your wishes, and the things you are still figuring out.

A boundary can be specific and kind: “I want to hear what’s happening. I have twenty minutes this evening.” Or: “I care about this, and I’m not able to take it on.” You can let the other person have a response without immediately changing your answer.

Find the answer you can stand behind.

Before agreeing, ask yourself: do I want to, am I able to, and what would this require of me?
Look for a yes, a no, or a more honest version of the request that you can offer.
Say what is true as simply as you can. Notice what it is like to remain present afterward.

A life on the dance floor

I’m a Nia Black Belt–trained dance guide with 25 years of experience. Although I’m no longer Nia-certified, my ten-year education in The Body’s Way and The Joy of Movement continues to inform how I guide.

For nearly two decades, I taught four classes a week on the same dance floor. Returning to practice with a community, through all the contrasts of real life, was both humbling and emboldening. It refined my leadership and deepened my capacity to hold space for transformation.

That history lives in the work today: warmth, discernment, playfulness, and the pleasure of creating together.

I return to a practical question: how does what we discover change the way we live?

My psychotherapy work, alongside my study of the Enneagram and Internal Family Systems, helps me understand patterns, listen to the different parts of us, and make room for choice.

Movement and mindfulness bring inquiry into the body: what we feel, how we respond, and what becomes possible when we pay attention.

Symbolic and contemplative traditions offer other ways to explore meaning. I approach them with curiosity and discernment, returning to lived experience.
